Duval Urban Debate Summer Program (1 photos)

The 2010 DUDL Summer Debate Institute is geared toward reviewing the fundamentals of debate, and then using that foundation to advance rhetorical theory and argumentation techniques for serious competitors. After completion of summer camp students will gain the confidence they need to succeed in any academic subject, any school debate, and any debate team competition. Students will also engage in online activities using various collaborative applications. The benefit of using virtual tools and applications is to foster synchronous and asynchronous sessions to reach students who may have challenges attending camp, enabling them to review materials, provide feedback, and ask feedback. Educators will be trained on using and assessing these types of tools in real time.

Middle School Debate City Championship April 2010 (82 photos)

The final debate of the year for the Duval UDL was a true classic. Northwestern's Diamond Gilyard and debate mate Cetia Hunter went head-to-head on the pros and cons of food stamps for government increase in funding. A panel of three judges were on pens and needles throughout the debate until the final rebuttal. Cetia Hunter stood up, took a deep breath and spoke. The decision was unanimous...Northwestern Middle School's Teach for America, All-City Debate Coaches, held their heads high with Yellow Jacket pride as they squeezed out a victory over Ribault Middle's Debate Team. History was made as the first ever Duval County Middle School Debate Championship was inked in stone. For details, visit www.dudl.org See you this Summer!

This mark the very first debate tournament administered by the Duval UDL. A practice round of debate turned competition in a blink of the eye. It was obvious the Paxon Middle School Principal, Darrell Perry was going to make sure he set the pace for what a campus, school, and administration should look like when hosting a major event. Dr. Perry was a key force in helping the Duval UDL gain structure and a "system" that worked for all parties involved. Congratulations to debate coach, Kenneth Dikas for preparing his debate team at Ribault Middle. Ribault received the highest honors at the first tournament, but all schools represented beyond expectations! www.dudl.org

DUDL - 3rd Debate Tournament (133 photos)

LIGHTS. CAMERA. ACTION!!!! The final debate tournament before the City Wide Championship took place at Northwestern Middle School. Boy was it intense! With everything on the line, Northwestern faculty and administration knew from the onset that the competition would be steep and full of tenacity. Principal Gresham set the stage with a highly polished school campus and high tech presentation. School administrators and educators were on sight to help the tournament run very smooth. We even had delicious cinnamon buns for our judges, volunteers and staff! Over 12 debate teams competed in a full day of policy debate argumentation. Student progress was obvious as the DUDL debaters made solid presentations around the pros and cons of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Mental Health services in impoverished communities. The debate students who arrived at 8:30am on this day, were totally different from those of previous months - - and so were the coaches. You could see sense of calm, cool confidence on everybody's face. Even our dream team administrators, Lindsey Weirich, Christian Reis and Dr. Deborah Lynn-Owen...they had this peaceful, "let's-do-it" mindset about them. This tournament was a clear example that we had arrived! The Duval Urban Debate League was here to not just stay, but make a impact on all parties involved! I saw new parents, male parents, for the first time. I say new debaters for the first time. I saw DCPS school videographers, and people from the school's yearbook team out to take pictures. And who can forget about the new judges who came to show support and to express their love for the new debate program. Lashonda Holloway of the LJH Foundation spoke words of encouragement and promised to establish a scholarship fund to expand the program. Councilwoman at-large and Mayoral Candidate Glorious Johnson left an indelible mark on the youth and their parents as a living example of what debate did in her life. And German Vivas returned for another tournament to share his support and dedication to help spread debate across the community and the state of Florida. New supporters poured into the school on a Saturday throughout the day simply to show their support and to get a glimpse of the Great Debaters. A special thanks goes out to the Florida State College Debate team for their support as judges and volunteers. The Butler Middle Debate Team took home first place, while John E. Ford Middle brought home the second place trophy and Northwestern finished third. The next debate tournament is for all of the marbles. The purpose of the Community Debate Forum is to create dialogue around the holistic development of urban youth and the importance of a global education. Two main themes of the event will touch on each point, as follows: Brenda Priestly-Jackson, keynote speaker, will highlight the future of education and how the community-at-large must alter our perspective on life to create effective change. Mrs. Priestly-Jackson will give us a snap shot of what education looks like in 2020. The panel was made up of key figure heads in Florida who share their views on the role they play in state and local government. On the other side of the panel, the Great Debaters shared their thoughts on the negative impact of social service on youth and adults. The program was moderated by Mr. Jermyn Shannon El.

DUDL - 2nd debate tournament (100 photos)

The second urban debate tournament in Jacksonville took place at Raines High School. We wanted the middle school students to have a thorough experience of what the "next level" looked like for many of them who attended the feeder schools surrounding Raines High. Also, many students were very familiar with the Raines, including myself, having a rich traditional connection through former alumni and immediate family members who attended the historic black institution. Principal Maxey was our host for the day and he made sure things ran on time and according to schedule. It was a wonderful experience for everyone engaged, including first time judges, German Vivas of the First Coast Coalition, Joy Burgess, Community Pediatrics of the University of Florida, and the Honorable Mia Jones, Florida State Senate House of Reps, . It was easy for me to tell that many of the debaters were a bit nervous going into their 2nd official debate tournament; but it didn't take long for them to shake their tale feathers off. After the first round of debate and a "get fired up" speech from Principal Maxey (whose daughter is an outstanding debater on Ribault Middle's Team) the Great Debaters were ready to take it to the podium... AND BOY DID THEY TAKE IT TO THE PODIUM! After the dust settled, the Northwestern Debate Team came out from the shadows of the clouds with the First Place trophy. Two young males who worked tirelessly for three months to show their value, with arms outstretched, let the world know that they shall be HEARD! Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Commissioning - St. Augustine, Florida (129 photos)

Blacksonville reporters were on the scene to cover the first ever Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor Proclamation and Fort Mose Tour on Thursday, Feb 18 at St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum, St Augustine, FL The program was a historical celebration for St. Johns County's black, african, and native cultural heritage as it laid the framework for Gullah-Geechee emancipatory legacy in Northeast Florida.

In May of 2008 Blacksonville's founder Jermyn Shannon El traveled to the mid-west to cover a rare trip back home for Mad Dad's President and Co-founder, Eddie Staton. Eddie, who now resides in Jacksonville, Florida was previously diagnosed with Cancer ( recently overturned doctors) and his return was to Omaha was a commemoration of his accomplishments ( the city of Omaha AND Pittsburgh honored him with EDDIE STATON DAY) and to Bless him with love and admiration. It was truly a powerful experience to witness common folk in their healing glory...no matter what religion or creed.

This trip was productive in that it gave us the vision to layout the type of internet/film studio, location, and market position that would best suit a majority black populace. It was also a pleasure to visit the campuses of Spelman, Clark, and Morehouse again.
