Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Foundation, Inc., of Jacksonville, Florida will start 2012 with a full weekend of MLK Holiday Celebration activities. The MLK Parade and the accompanying citywide activities are planned as acts of joy, contemplation, reflection, introspection, and celebration.

MLK Parade Route

The parade will follow its usual route: Water Street East to Independent Drive (past the Jacksonville Landing) to Newnan Street. Then North to Bay Street. Bay Street East (past JSO Building) to Gator Bowl Way. The parade will end on at the Metropolitan Park (Everbank Field).

Parade Staging Area

We will begin staging the MLK Parade at 7:00a, Monday, January 16, 2012 in the vicinity of the Federal Reserve Bank on Water Street.

Parade Entry

For the first time ever there will be an entry fee for all non-school participants in the MLK Holiday Parade. During the 2011 holiday celebration, we requested a $25 donation per parade entry. We were saddled with a debt to the City of Jacksonville and no operational funds for 2012 principally because less than one-half of the 2011 parade entrants actually donated $25.00.

Net proceeds will fund future MLK Holiday Celebration activities including MLK Scholarship Awards to attend Edward Waters College and Florida State College at Jacksonville. Also, we will defray expenses of parade participating marching bands.

Business Participation

Participating in the parade is one manner in which we pay homage to the proud legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and it also provides businesses and organizations with an excellent way to promote themselves, and to gain low-cost visibility.

For the first time in our history of hosting the MLK Parade in Jacksonville, entries will be limited, therefore, please note the application deadline date of December 30, 2011.

The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival (TBBHF/The Festival) is a ten-day cultural event that features speakers, musicians, artists, poets and craftspeople locally and nationally. The Festival, which will take place January 12-21, 2012, traditionally begins the week-end before and concludes the week-end after the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday to promote diversity and cultural sensitivity. Each day of this ten-day experience provides both children and adults with an opportunity to increase their awareness of African and African-American culture and history. This event strives to increase diversity and cultural sensitivity.

 

Mission:

The purpose of the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival, Inc. is to offer the community of Tampa Bay a unique blend of African and African American art, culture and history, therefore serving as a conduit for promoting and perpetuating the art, culture and history of African Americans and African people for the benefit of all Tampa Bay residents and tourists to the Tampa Bay area. It exists to support the culturally rich and diverse Tampa Bay community by ensuring all events are inclusive of its entire people.

 

History:

The Festival’s founder, Dr. Samuel Lamar Wright, Sr. and Tampa Bay & Company, a major contributor, had a vision to raise awareness of the African and African-American heritage within the Tampa Bay Area and surrounding community. The result of their combined efforts was increased exposure to African and African-American culture through positive images and achievements. The Festival surrounds the teachings and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who advocated for a diverse community that is culturally sensitive to all who live there.

JAN. 12, 2012 – DR. BENJAMIN CHAVIS

Benjamin Chavis is an African American civil rights leader. In his youth, Dr. Chavis was an assistant to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who inspired him to work in the civil rights movement. Dr. Chavis rose to international prominence as the leader of the Wilmington Ten. A former Vice President of the National Council of Churches, Dr. Chavis became the Executive Director of the NAACP, and he served as the National Director of the Million Man March as well as the Founder and CEO of the National African American Leadership Summit (NAALS). Since 2001 he has been CEO and Co-Chairman of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, in New York City which he cofounded with hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons.
